The 2009 TaylorMade ZTP Smoke Wedge was produced with the main intention of giving a player a tour performance club, that offers players almost unparalleled control of the golf ball.
The club is designed with TaylorMades new Z groove, which is supposed to help produce more spin, and thus make it easier to stop the golf ball on the green more quickly. Not only that though, this wedge also looks great as well.
The lofts available are 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 degrees. And like with the RAC Chrome Wedge from TaylorMade, this club is fitted with the True Temper Dynamic Gold Steel shaft.
We put the 56 degree model through its paces to get a view of how this wedge performs, fitted with the wedge flex True Temper shaft mentioned above.
Not only does this TaylorMade ZTP wedge look great in the bag, but the darker smoke finish really looks good when this wedge is sitting behind the ball as well. You can't help but feel confident holding the ZTP Smoke wedge in your hands.
The weight in particular of this club is very nice and balanced, probably as close to perfect as you're going to get in a wedge.
Certainly the first time you ever hit this wedge, you will very likely get a lot more spin than what you expecting. It takes a few shots to get used to the amount of spin this club can generate, it really can spin the golf ball back like crazy.
But this is just the sort of control that all golfers are likely to be wanting from a wedge.
The TaylorMade ZTP is also extremely versatile, greenside bunker shots in particular are generally quite easy and require very little effort. Even when the ball is buried this wedge can get you out with pretty good results.
Hitting from tight lies as well is no chore either, nor was chipping or pitching from heavy or quite thick rough. The club just gets under the ball so easily and smoothly, and sends it up in the air.
Also from the longer distances of 70 yards or more, the Z TP Wedge is just so forgiving and easy to hit. Even if you don't quite catch a shot right, the ZTP Smoke wedge is still extremely accurate.
We hold the RAC Chrome wedge from TaylorMade in very high regard, but this ZTP model probably just edges it. Looks, performance, feel, everything about this wedge is what a player would look for.
Would without doubt recommend to any level of golfer who is looking for a new wedge. You have to try this club out yourself and see the results, it almost has to be seen to be believed.
It is admittedly true that the Taylor Made ZTP Smoke wedge is one of the more expensive on the market just now. But from what we saw, the high price tag is definitely backed up with what the club can do for your game.
At most places as of 2011, you should generally expect to pay around £80 or $130 for a TaylorMade ZTP Smoke Wedge brand new. If you can find one for less, don't think about it, get it.
