Released in 2007, the TaylorMade Burner XD Irons are still a relatively recent addition to the iron market. And as with most Taylor Made irons they have an attractive looking design and some nice graphics.
Intended to be extremely forgiving, the Burner XD Irons feature very large oversized heads. Which is intended to make the clubs more solid at impact, and make it easier for golfers to get the golf ball airborne.
Standing over the iron at address it can be seen that the clubs large heads have a very thick top line, and this does help to do what's intended and inspire confidence when setting up for a shot.
However the Burner Plus models are probably slightly easier to hit than these TaylorMade Burner XD irons. Though in truth they are both easy to hit in the hands of a reasonable golfer.
The Burner XD irons also feature TaylorMade's Superfast Technology, including light weight shafts which help to produce faster swing speeds and thus more power.
And power is certainly something that these irons should give to almost anyone who plays them.
At first it can almost seem like a hindrance, as you may find yourself over-clubbing at times when first using the Burner XD irons. But it just takes a bit of time and practice for most players to find their own range with these clubs.
The area that we found the Burner XD irons performed best was probably with regards to forgiveness. Whether you try to smash the ball, or whether you make a smooth swing, this is a very straight iron.
Once you get used to the distance you are almost certain to hit some more greens in regulation if you're a mid handicapper. It's very difficult to send a shot way off line.
As such though these probably aren't clubs you will look at if you're a player who likes to work the ball. These are irons that are made to be hit straight, and there are definitely other irons out there that are far easier to work the golf ball with.
If you're a mid to high handicapper looking for very straight, forgiving irons, that also give you good power and distance. Then the TaylorMade Burner XD Irons are one of the best irons around just now.
In terms of value for money, like with many TaylorMade irons just now, these clubs are about what you would probably expect, pricey but not massively expensive.
Brand new as of 2012, the steel shaft versions generally retail at around £230 or $368, with the graphite shaft clubs usually being priced at around £250 or $400.
