Callaway Hyper X Driver
The 2007 Callaway Hyper X Driver is a very modern looking club, designed with a substantially large head, and thus a larger than normal sweet spot. The looks did get a bit of a mixed view, but any golfer can get past the looks of a club if it performs well for them.
The lofts available are 9, 10 and 11 degrees, with only the 10 and 11 degree models being available in left hand as well as right.
We tested the 9 degree model fitted with the factory standard Fujikura 360 Fit On shaft in stiff flex.
Once the club was grounded it did look pretty good at address, you do feel confident standing over the ball that you're going to hit a good drive with this club.
And it was very pleasing that many good drives were there to be seen. More than anything, what you are likely to notice the most when you first hit balls with this club, is the incredible distance you get. A good well hit drive on occasion went up to 30 or even 40 yards further than a lot of other newer drivers on the market.
The speed of the golf ball off the club face at impact is just fantastic. Even on slower swings the ball still just flies off like a rocket. Producing a very powerful and penetrating ball flight, that is very rarely affected much by high winds.
Unlike the Callaway FT-9 though, this club was quite difficult to shape or work the ball with. Even better players that we spoke to didn't find it an easy task.
However the consequence of this is that the Hyper X Driver is impressively accurate, it's certainly not the sort of club you will end up spraying about all over the place.
We would probably recommend the Callaway Hyper X Driver to any golfer who wants more distance out of their drives. Along with having a lot of forgiveness that they can rely on.
Every player we spoke to who tried this club were impressed by how far it went for them. But we'd recommend getting personally fitted first, to find the right specifications for you and your swing.
Another good thing about this club just now is the price. It's extremely good value for money as of 2012, with prices for the Callaway Hyper X generally around £100 or $127.
Definitely worth a look for any golfer on the search for a new Driver, despite the fact it has been available for a couple of years now. It's still a very efficient Callaway driver that does perform very well.
